March 11, 2026 | La Plata, MD
CCBC Essex suffered its first loss of the 2026 season on Wednesday, falling 11–9 to the College of Southern Maryland in a non-region
matchup.
The Knights came out strong early, building a four-run lead, but a late surge by the Hawks proved to be the difference. Southern Maryland took control in the middle innings and extended its lead in the eighth before Essex mounted a final push.
CCBC Essex opened the scoring in the first inning, capitalizing on a Southern Maryland error, followed by an RBI single from Michael Amadio (Sophomore, Lusby, MD). The Knights added to their lead in the second inning when Diego Garcia (Sophomore, Bradenton, FL) launched a two-run home run to center field.
Southern Maryland answered in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of multiple opportunities to even the score. Essex regained momentum in the third inning as Yariel Hernandez (Freshman, Moca, PR) delivered a two-run single to give the Knights a 6–4 advantage.
The Hawks responded again in the fifth inning, reclaiming the lead with timely hitting and disciplined at-bats. Southern Maryland's offense showed patience throughout the game, drawing 11 walks and consistently applying pressure on the basepaths.
Despite trailing late, Essex continued to battle, narrowing the deficit in the final innings with key at-bats, including a walk and a clutch double, but ultimately came up just short.
Offensively, the Knights recorded 12 hits on the day. Hernandez and Garcia each tallied two hits, while Laurin Guerra Guzman (Sophomore, Santo Domingo, DR), Hernandez, and Garcia each drove in two runs. Andy Martínez Rivera (Freshman, Vega Alta, PR) added speed on the bases with two stolen bases, helping Essex total five stolen bases in the contest.
On the mound, Drew Rommel (Sophomore, Fallston, MD) took the loss for Essex, working three innings.
Southern Maryland was led by Segarra, who drove in three runs from the ninth spot in the lineup, and De Los Santos, who reached base three times via walks.
CCBC Essex will look to bounce back in its next contest as the Knights return to action in Region 20 play.
