Fifth-Inning Surge Sends CCBC Essex to Third Straight Loss
March 29, 2026 | Harford Community College – Globe Cafe Field
CCBC Essex dropped its third consecutive game on Sunday afternoon, falling 20-4 to Monroe University at Harford Community College. An 11-run fifth inning by Monroe proved to be the difference, as the Knights were unable to recover after battling early.
Monroe jumped out early, plating two runs in the first inning before adding another two in the second on a home run to center field.
The Knights responded in the bottom half of the second inning to even the score. Freshman Ethan Mosteller (Harrisburg, PA) executed a perfect safety squeeze to bring home a run, and freshman Steven Gonzalez Rodriguez (Cidra, PR) followed with a home run to center field, tying the game at 4-4.
Monroe answered right back in the third inning, reclaiming the lead with a pair of run-scoring swings, including a two-run home run. A solo shot in the fourth extended the advantage before the Mustangs broke the game open in the fifth.
The decisive inning saw Monroe score 11 runs on a combination of timely hits, walks, and capitalizing on miscues, highlighted by a grand slam that pushed the game out of reach.
Gonzalez Rodriguez (Freshman, Cidra, PR) led the Knights offensively with two RBIs. Sophomore Connor Bailey (Salisbury, MD), freshman Jacob Severino (Queens, NY), freshman Nehomar Caldera (Memphis, TN), sophomore Diego Garcia (Bradenton, FL), and sophomore Anthony D'Alfonso (Baltimore, MD) each added a hit in the effort.
Freshman Zacchaeus Artry (Memphis, TN) got the start on the mound for Essex, working 2.2 innings while striking out two. Monroe's offense proved difficult to contain, finishing with 12 hits and drawing eight walks.
Despite the result, the Knights showed early offensive execution and will look to regroup quickly as the day continues.
