CCBC Essex battled back multiple times but came up just short in a 5-4 loss to Hagerstown CC on Tuesday afternoon at CCBC Essex Stadium in Rosedale, Maryland.
Hagerstown struck first in the second inning after Benedict delivered an RBI single to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The Knights answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning when Guerra Guzman ripped a double to center field to even the score at 1-1.
CCBC Essex grabbed its first lead in the third inning after Manuel Agostini lifted a sacrifice fly to plate a run and make it 2-1.
Hagerstown responded in the fourth when Antonio launched a two-run homer to right field, swinging the momentum back in favor of the Hawks at 3-2.
The game remained tight throughout the middle innings as sophomore right-hander Casey Parsons (Salisbury, MD) turned in another strong outing on the mound for the Knights. Parsons worked seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three.
Trailing by one entering the seventh, CCBC Essex tied the game once again after Connor Bailey (Soph., Salisbury, MD) delivered a sacrifice fly to score the tying run.
The game stayed deadlocked until the top of the ninth inning when Hagerstown pieced together two clutch hits. Illig lined an RBI double down the left field line before Tobin added an RBI single to put the Hawks ahead 5-3.
The Knights attempted one final rally in the bottom of the ninth but could not complete the comeback.
Joey Rosa (Fr., Carolina, PR) and Andy Martínez Rivera (Fr.) each collected two hits to lead the CCBC Essex offense. Agostini, Bailey, Guerra Guzman, and Yahil Diaz (Fr., Carolina, PR) each drove in a run for the Knights.
Hagerstown was led offensively by Antonio, who drove in two runs with his fourth-inning home run, while Miller finished with two hits.
CCBC Essex will look to bounce back as the Knights continue their homestand against Hagerstown in the next matchup.
