Behind strong performances by incoming sophomore Rob Andrews (Towson, MD), Landon Almonte (Viera Beach, FL), & Sophomore Peyton Moritzen (Manheim Township, PA), the CCBC Essex Knights opened the season on the win column as they defeated USMAPS 21-15.
Coming into the season, the Knights are ranked #4 in the nation. Their most recent matchup against each other was a 24-19 victory for the Knights in West Point, NY.
Sophomore Attackman Rob Andrews opened the scoring for the Knights and finished the first quarter with 4 Goals and 1 Assist. He would finish the game with 7 Goals, 2 Assists, and 1 GB. It was a back-and-forth first quarter as USMAPS would find an answer to the Knights' scoring, with the first quarter ending 7-5 for the Knights.
Andrews, along with Freshman M Landon Almonte, Sophomores Peyton Moritzen and Jacob Bieschke (Soph., Baltimore, MD), the scoring wasn't going to be denied as they combined for 16 Goals, 7 Assists & 7 GBs.
It was a back-and-forth battle, but Essex pulled away in the 4th quarter with Goal contributions from Fr. Landon Almonte, Soph. Rob Andrews and Fr. Luke Wojtech (Crofton, MD).
The Knights were productive in the form of 61 Total Shots, 16-21 in clear opportunities, and 46 GBs. The Knights' defense did not disappoint either, as they made USMAPs turn the ball over 18 times, along with Sophomore Goalie Collin Parker (Martinsburg, WV) having 15 saves.
The Knights will hope to ride the momentum as they will next face the Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks Wed 3/4, in Arnold, MD.
