The CCBC Essex Knights Women's Basketball team's aspirations for a perfect season came to an end on Saturday afternoon after a tough 89-70 loss on the road to the #4 Union Owls. The loss brings the Knights record to (17-1) (7-0) on the season.
The Game was a matchup between two top five ranked heavyweights, and from tipoff the two squads were evenly matched, as for the first half neither team was able to gain a sizeable lead over the other. A strong first quarter by #3 Paige Smith, that saw her score nine of the team's 19 points powered them to a one-point lead at the end of the first. By halftime, Smith contributed 14 points, Gissel "Gigi" Gamble had 11 points, and Adela Cecunjanin had eight (all in the second quarter). The Owls had built a slight 40-38 lead.
In the second half, the Knights struggled offensively, and the Owls capitalized, outscoring the Knights 49-32. The team made efforts to rally back, with Gamble scoring 15 second half points, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome. They ultimately fell by a 19-point margin.
While this was a tough loss, the Knights have little time to dwell on it as they face off against the SUNY Niagara Timberwolves a day later on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM
