CCBC Essex Defeats Chesapeake College to Even the Season Series
Wye Mills, MD — After dropping Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader, CCBC Essex bounced back with a strong performance in Game 2, defeating Chesapeake College 10-6 to even the season series.
The Knights struck first in the opening inning on a groundout by sophomore Eduardo Zayas (Cidra, PR / Bilingual Education School at Cidra). They added another run in the second when freshman Michael Amadio (Lusby, MD / Patuxent) lifted a sacrifice fly to center, making it 2-0.
Chesapeake answered in the third, tying the game 2-2 after Hubred drove in two with a single down the left field line.
CCBC Essex reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Amadio, but Chesapeake rallied for two runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a Tolle RBI single and a balk by freshman Drew Rommel (Fallston, MD / Fallston) that pushed another run across, giving the Skipjacks a 4-3 lead.
Essex responded with authority in the fifth, plating five runs on three hits, aided by a critical error that brought home two runs, swinging momentum back to the Knights for an 8-4 lead.
Rommel started on the mound for Essex, going 4.2 innings while allowing six runs on six hits. He issued no walks and recorded no strikeouts. Freshman Diego Garcia (Bradenton, FL / Manatee) was clutch in relief, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, surrendering only two hits and striking out two to earn the save.
The Knights collected nine hits in the win. Amadio, Maxwell Urena (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King), Connor Bailey (Salisbury, MD / Parkside), and Hiyu Ota (Sammu Chida, Japan / Chiba Prefectural Naruto Senior) all recorded multi-hit games. Ota's performance was especially notable, as he became the career record holder for sacrifice bunts in CCBC Essex history.
Casey Parsons (Salisbury, MD / Parkside), Amadio, and Zayas each tallied two RBIs in the game. The Knights also flashed speed on the base paths with four stolen bases.
For Chesapeake, Hubred led the offense with a 2-for-4 day and two RBIs. Starter Snyder took the loss, allowing eight runs (three earned) over 4.2 innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
With the win, CCBC Essex improves to 19-19 on the season and will look to build momentum at home Tuesday against Harford Community College. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM
